After 4 months of careful planning, the Hyde Community Events team are all getting rather excited at the prospect of staging the Hyde Spectacular Christmas Lights Switch-on.
This year’s event, which coincides with the Christmas themed Artisan Market, on Saturday 25th November, will be a full day of fun family entertainment which will feature over 15 variety acts that will perform throughout the day from the centrally located, high visibility stage area.
Tameside Radio 103.6 will also be doing an outside broadcast from the event on the Mark Andrews show that goes out 10.00am till 2.00pm with the radio stations popular professional and excellent presenter Louise Croombs live on-stage from 2.00pm till 5.00pm to compère the event, with the popular, charismatic local celebrity Justin Moorhouse; stand-up comedian, radio DJ and actor, switching-on the lights under the watchful eye of the Civic Mayor at 4.00pm till 4.15pm followed by the arrival of that fine old gentleman – Father Christmas!
To add to the impact of what promises to be a spectacular day of Christmas Shopping from a large number of craft & artisan producers, there will also be a grand raffle with profits carried forward to fund future events planned for 2018; and a number of small fairground rides, hot street-food, Tweed’s licensed bar, a mouth-watering hog roast, as well as burgers, hot-dogs etc’ and Santa’s Grotto situated in the inside market
The Hyde Community Events Team, which comprise principally of volunteer members of Hyde Town Team & Hyde Town Council; namely Cllr Kinsey, Clare Rowbottom, Joanne Rowbottom, Andrew Richardson, Karen Dorney, Cllr Betty Affleck and Hyde Rotary’s Kevin Maddox, have worked tirelessly to deliver this new switch-on event and stated: “We couldn’t be more pleased that this entire Christmas Lights programme has been so enthusiastically welcomed and supported by so many of the town’s retail community and also that Justin Moorhouse accepted the invitation from us to help get Christmas Switch-on party started in Hyde. The event is set to be the biggest and best Christmas lights switch-on event we’ve had in the town for many years and to have such local support and a popular TV personality doing the honours will be fantastic.”
Speaking on behalf of the Town Team, Julia Harrison said, “It’s great to see so many organisations and local businesses come together to bring the Christmas lights switch-on event together, and judging by the town’s building atmosphere, it’s going to be a fantastic day out for all the Hyde community.
Karen Dorney, who organizes the town’s monthly Artisan Markets concluded by saying,” We want as many people as possible to enjoy a unique experience that will be memorable for visitors, residents and regular local shoppers alike; hopefully creating great family fun images to be shared in the press and on social media that will continue to keep raising Hyde’s retail profile right across the borough.”

Throughout the Christmas Artisan themed Market and Switch-on event the Hyde community events team will be on site – all be wearing florescent jackets and lanyards. There will also be a number of stewards on duty.
Hyde might well be a small Tameside town, but this year it will be bursting with big Christmas charm.
